Guilt Free Milkshake Recipe

Our entire household has become obsessed with shakes and smoothies this year and with the incredible variety of blenders to choose from right now, getting plenty of goodness into your diet has never been easier. When I am knocking up a batch for the whole family, (of four), I tend to reach for the big glass jug blender, but the new breed of blend and go smoothie makers have made life even easier. With a blend and go style machine, you can make a quick shake with minimal washing up and give everyone a chance to choose their own variation of ingredients.

This morning I put together a blend of coconut milk, frozen banana, avocado and a teaspoon of chocolate flavoured protein powder. This created a thick shake that was half way between ice cream and a smoothie. For a natural, healthy ice cream simply add one more frozen banana to thicken, or to create a looser smoothie blend, add more coconut milk until you reach the consistency you like.

Experiment To Find Your Own Favourite Blend…

You could replace the protein powder with cocoa powder, a spoonful of peanut butter, honey, cinnamon or a handful of berries. Have fun playing around with different flavours and see what you can come up with!

This recipe is a great base for the whole family as it can be tailored to suit and gives you and your kids the opportunity to enjoy a guilt free treat.

The quantities I use are as follows:

  • 300 ml Coconut Milk (Use any milk as an alternative)
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • Half of an avocado
  • 1 teaspoon of flavoured protein powder (switch this ingredient to create different flavours)

I always have some chopped banana ready to go in the freezer, adding it to the blender frozen creates a cool shake without ice and gives you a rich, creamy consistency.

Coconut Milk is excellent for rehydration, containing the same balance of electrolytes that you would find in an isotonic drink. This lactose free milk is rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Bananas are a wonderful source of iron, potassium, fibre, protein and vitamins A&C.  Did you know that they help to improve your mood and reduce symptoms of depression thanks to a type of amino acid that converts to serotonin?

Avocado is a highly nutritious super food that contains a ton of nutrients, including a high quantity of fibre and antioxidants. It also contains over 20 different vitamins and minerals and with a notably high potassium level, avocado can help to reduce both high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Blending shakes and smoothies is a convenient way to pack plenty of goodness into your diet every day and a great way to disguise certain ingredients you may be less keen on.

This thick shake took minutes to put together and kept me going all morning, but it is also a great standby when you have a craving for ice cream in the evenings. The perfect guilt free recipe!
