For me, being surrounded by clutter makes me feel stressed and impacts upon my organisational skills in a big way. I am not saying I never get in a mess… I do however go to great lengths to avoid it.
We live in such a consumer society that it can be frighteningly easy to accumulate a load of ‘stuff’ that we do not necessarily need or use. Some of us are great at keeping on top of this and know how and when to discard of things to avoid finding ourselves in a cluttered environment, whilst others become so emotionally attached to things that they feel overwhelmed and cannot let go of them.
If you fall into the latter of the two categories and your home is well overdue a clear out, tackle it in manageable chunks, one area at a time – you will get there in the end! Get on top of your clutter and stay on top of it by developing good habits.
If it doesn’t work, if you don’t need it or you don’t like it; GET RID OF IT!!!
PICK AN AREA TO BEGIN WITH AND BE RUTHLESS!
Choose the area you want to start on and go through it with a fine tooth comb, considering whether each item is essential or whether it falls into one of the above three categories. Chuck all of the unnecessary clutter into a box and recycle as much as possible by either giving it away to someone who will make good use for it, taking it to a charity shop, selling it or if it really is junk, binning it!
MAKE SURE EACH ITEM HAS ITS DESIGNATED HOME
Now you have freed up some space and are left with your essential items that you love and need, give them all a home. When everything has a home, you will always know where to find it, when you have finished using this item, get into the habit of putting it away and not only will you never lose it again, it will not be one of those items that is lying around, cluttering up your living space!
NOW YOU HAVE A CLEAR, ORGANISED SPACE…
Keep it that way and choose the next area to target on your hit list. Keep working at it a bit at a time and before you know it you will be wasting less time looking for things, you will be surrounded by the essential things you need and love and your home and world will feel like a much better place.
One day, I will fit into those tiny jeans. One day I will give this wedding dress to my daughter. One day that awful set of plates that my Grandma gave me might be in fashion again. Yep, one day…
Let go of it. Yes you might be a size 8 again if you work at it and you can then reward yourself with a new pair of jeans, in the mean time, let someone else wear your old ones. Will your daughter really want your old dress? Or will she feel obliged to wear it if you have managed to keep it for that long and the moths have not eaten part of it. Let her choose her own. You hate those plates. If you loved them it would not matter to you that they are not ‘in’ right now. Get rid of that clutter, let go, you will feel better and you will not be passing the responsibility of getting rid of it to someone else in the future.
Do it! Be liberated from your clutter and see for yourself how satisfying it is!
